Rebuilding Lives and Fostering Resilience in Thika West Sub County.
The Girl Child Network (GCN) and Alabaster International are committed to empowering girls residing in Kiambu County’s Semi-Informal Settlement Schemes (SISS) of Thika Town. These efforts aim to equip them with the knowledge and tools necessary to safeguard and advocate for their fundamental rights.
A Day of Celebration and Recognition
On July 6th, 2024, the Fernandos Salama Safe Shelter and Mentorship Hub held a momentous event. We were privileged to welcome Dr. Shannon Fernandos, President of Alabaster International, a key development partner and sponsor of the Shelter, along with their team. The day was filled with enriching activities designed to support the girls, including:
- Skills development sessions
- Spiritual guidance
- Open discussions focusing on girls’ issues
- Engaging dance/ poetry sessions
- Individual counselling and mentoring sessions
- Shared meals, snacks, and beverages
- Inspiring speeches
A Renaming Ceremony for a Renewed Purpose
The day culminated in a significant event: the renaming of the Safe Shelter. The Fernandos Salama Safe Shelter and Mentorship Hub for Survivors of Gender Based Violence now stands as a tribute to the parents of Dr. Shannon Fernandos, President of Alabaster International.

This event marked a significant milestone in GCN and Alabaster International’s collaborative efforts to empower girls in Kiambu County and provide them with a safe haven for healing and growth.
